school exercise

In this lesson we were asked to pair up in threes and make a short sequence going of a given script. We were aloud to use the script however we wanted to. (Regarding our topic of choice)

We were supposed to come up with what we were going to do in our groups and then go away from the classroom and film the sequence. Then after about 30 minutes we had to come back and edit it in IMovie and then send it of.
So in our group me and Pandora were the actors and the initial idea for the sequence was brought up by me. The was idea that we (me&Pandora) could pretend that we were steeling teachers food. The rest of the group agreed with the idea.
We went to get our props (food/snacks) in the main house and then we decided to film in the main hallway in the main building right by reception. Which was a bad decision all together. Even tho there were no people in the hallway and it was completely silent when we first got there... that changed the within the next couple minutes.
All the teachers and staff started to come out their offices and started eating the food we were using as props. Then they kept being in the shot... and talking.
GT wanted to be the camera man so he was the one who filmed all the shots on his phone.
Me and Pandora organized the script and the concept of it. And then acted it out.
When we finished filming we went back to the class room to edit the clips...
But we had some serious technical problems with transportation the clips to the computer... and then all the shots GT took were mostly very blurred and in some videos the sound was muffled or not at all...
I think that the way we wanted to go about it and the way it actually turned out we’re two different things. I think the idea and concept was well thought out, but still out group failed to present the sequence and the quality of the shots were very poor and due to technical difficulties we couldn’t even export them from GTs phone.
Also I learned that we have to film in a quite space, where we wouldn’t be interrupted. (Next time) Also by other people being in our filming space effected our conversation and the filming took way more time that it would’ve.
Although this exercise failed (for our group) it was a interesting first experience. And we definitely learned what not to do in the future when we will be filming.

this is the video me and my team created.

this is the script we were asked to use:

Saving Private Ryan - sound

PREDICTING THE SOUND WITHOUT LISTENING TO IT:

I think that in the opening sequence we would hear the waves breaking, boat motors and the water splashing against the boats, metal water battle opening, men vomiting on the boat, men yelling/speaking, gun firing, bodies splashing into the water, soldiers crying out loud, fire burning.

I think I predicted the sounds of this sequence pretty accurately. The sound makes the sequence more effective, dramatic violent.

Kill Bill – sound

As the opening scene starts we hear country/western music while there are nails being hammered into a wooden coffin… this means the sound (the music) doesn’t go with what we are seeing in the scene which make the sound CONTRAPUNTAL.

The women in the coffin is gasping for breath and it’s a SYNCHRONOUS sound (realistic).

The screen goes dark, so the only thing we acknowledge is the sound. We can hear men grunting while lifting the coffin. Then we hear the coffin being lowered into the ground (still with the screen being dark). When the coffin is set into the ground everything goes silent and then we hear people digging up the grave. We hear the women screaming and banging on the lid, also she turned on a torch which made us see what was going on.

SOUND

Film makers started to use sound in films since 1927.

Sound is meant to make what’s happening in the film more naturalistic and realistic.

SOUND BRIDGE

For example there can be a sound bridge in between scenes to make a better transition and make it more continues.

PLEONASTIC SOUND

The technique to create this sound is called Foley sound. Pleonastic sound is a type of sound that is very exaggerated to create a better effect. For example in horror movies we can hear the tap dripping much more louder than it actually is to create an unsettling feeling on the audience.

PARALLEL SOUND

This is when the sound matches with what’s happening in the scene.

CONTRAPUNTAL SOUND

Has a disorientation effect. This is when the sound doesn’t match with what’s happening in the scene. The sound is running against the image of the film.

SOUND IN TV AND FILM

We have two types of sound in this area. SYNCHRONOUS-sound of what is actually happening in the scene. ASYNCHRONOUS- this is for example a voice over that plays over a scene. The sound and the image don’t necessarily go hand in hand.

SILENCE- is just as important in scenes.

DIALOGUE- the tone and pitch of the actors voices contribute to what is going on in the scene.

Opening sequences A1 - Spiral of Silence

In this opening sequence there is a man driving a van with a young girl sitting next to him. They are going after a girl that is running in the forest. This sequence falls under the genera of thriller.

When the camera is shooting scenes in the van, it's positioned in the back seat of the van so we see the characters from the back and it's also recording hand held, that means that the camera is shaky. It gives us a feeling that we are in the van  with the characters. Then there is a close up at the GPS on the girls phone which she is using to track the girl that is running in the woods. Also in some scenes we can see the camera facing the characters (in the van) from the front, it's shooting from a low angle as a close up.

When the camera is recording the girl running in the forest it's moving with her, the camera captures her in a mid shot. (we can see the background and the girl from head to knees). then there is a close up on her as she is looking which way to go. We can see, that she's confused, lost and scared even just by looking at her movement and facial expression.

There is even a shot of just the van driving past fast prom a high angle on a small hill. Then the camera focuses on the path that the scared girl is running on.

When the man and the other girl get out of the van. There are multiple different shots. First the camera is shooting from a high angle on a small hill and moving in the same direction as the characters and then the camera is shooting them from inside the van as they run up the small hill infant of them.

The scared girl trips over into a big puddle, she gets very dirty...the camera is shooting as well as from the front as it is from the back. She then runs and sits beside a tree... the camera was already steadily positioned there

As the two other characters run towards her the camera focuses on a corps, which is the scared girl, but only she's dead now. The camera then zooms toward the two characters arriving at the location. They look very disturbed by what they see.

The music in this scene is non-diegetic. It plays quite quietly in the background. The tempo is quite fast and it's also very intense and uneasy.

opening sequences A1 - Kalender Prince

Today I watched the opening sequence of an opening scene, which students from hurtwood did last year. The sequence is located in the (schools') theatre. It's very dark, gloomy, almost scary in the theatre. The atmosphere is dark, dangerous, unsettling and creepy. There is a man (we can't see his face) and he is sitting at the top of the theatre, looking down at the stage, where there was a young ballerina who had bruises all over her body, looked like she was even tortured or beaten. She was forced to perform for him. After her performance a man comes in from the dark and shoots her and then another ballerina is forced to do the same.

The camera is doing a mid close up shot when it's focusing on the man (without the face), who looks superior and in charge and most importantly in control.

The ballerinas are the victims in this sequence and are under controll of the man. When the camera was focused on them it was mostly a wide shot and we could see their howl body, or the camera focused on their bruises and burns and briefly the camera was shooting also in a close up focusing on the face off the ballerinas.

In the sequence there are parts where we can hear "natural" sounds (footsteps) and then classical music starts and it's diegetic even for the characters.

The sequence is used to also show credits.

POSTER for film

This film poster would be used to promote the finished product. I created this entire poster myself. I am the author of the photograph and ...
